Fiddle competition: Seán Ó Riada Gold medal & €2500 for winner
RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcaster and musician Peadar Ó Riada has announced that the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2022 competition is now open for entries, and that this year’s contest is for fiddle. Friday 23 September is the deadline for entries.
The Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal Competition is an annual traditional music competition, focused on a different instrument every year, run by Peadar Ó Riada through his Cuireadh chun Ceoil radio programme. The winner will be presented with the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal and €2500.
Some of the country’s top fiddle talent features in the list of previous winners of the Ó Riada Gold Medal, including Aoife Ní Bhriain, Dublin, who won the competition in its inaugural year, Darragh Curtin, from Brosna in Kerry who won in 2015, and Rebecca McCarthy-Kent from Tramore in Waterford who won in 2019.
Peadar Ó Riada says:
“The competition is going from strength to strength every year, and musicians have spoken to us time and time again of the wonderfully supportive and friendly atmosphere of the final. We’ve come to know musicians from around the world through the competition, and we’re looking forward to getting to know more great fiddlers this year.”
Fifteen finalists will be chosen from the competition entrants, and invited to compete in the final in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork in the new year.
To enter the competition, musicians must:
- Record 5 sets of tunes
(They can be recorded on computer or phone, studio quality is not required) - Register at www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie
- Upload the sets to the website by Friday 23 September
The finalists will be announced on the Cuireadh chun Ceoil programme live from the Éigse Dhiarmuidín festival in early December.
The competition is sponsored by RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Iontaobhas Fódhla, Gael Linn, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, IMRO and the Rochestown Park Hotel.
